Steve McClaren’s men are currently fourth in the group with 11 points from six games behind leaders Croatia on 16. Russia and Israel are on 14 points with the latter having played seven games.

The Reds centre-back Jamie Carragher has been put on the substitutes’ bench with his place in the starting eleven taken by Manchester United’s Wes Brown.

Reading’s Nicky Shorey has been replaced by Chelsea’s Wayne Bridge, who recovered from his hip problem.
